“We are stuck with the problem of living despite economic and ecological ruination. Neither tales of progress nor of ruin tell us how to think about collaborative survival. It is time to pay attention to mushroom picking. Not that this will save us—but it might open our imaginations.” - The Mushroom at the End of the World, Anna Tsing
When Hiroshima was destroyed by an atomic bomb in 1945, it is said that the first living thing to emerge from the blasted landscape was a matsutake mushroom. This highly valued fungi is a symbol of survival. It thrives only in collaboration with other species, cultivating rich and fertile spaces out of ruin. In the current moment, we seek transformative collaborations to find a way to live amongst a global state of precarity.
We extend nets and skeins beneath the forest floor, we bind roots in the soil to transform landscapes. We open our imaginations... to create mushrooms.
